Going into this healthier lifestyle journey, I’m starting to slow down and make small choices - taking the stairs instead of the elevator and going for peaceful walks around Lake Merritt. This is the best way to start a journey towards a healthier lifestyle and continue and maintain it here’s why.

So just like everyone, I wish I had a perfect body, and I know that means a lot of time at the gym and a lot of work. The secret to actually starting a healthy lifestyle and achieving your dream body or at least getting a lot closer is something that you need to learn to do slowly and embrace the process.

When you want to get started, you go head-on at full steam and then end up reaching a breaking point.

Instead, start things slower and smaller, like choosing the stairs instead of the elevator. Reminds you that even the tiniest decisions can lead to significant transformations.

I don’t care what time of the day it is or exactly what is going on; I will go for a walk. Learning to incorporate regular walks into your daily routine is a game-changer.

Yes, walking helps burn calories, but it also provides moments of tranquility amid life’s chaos. I don’t know. There’s just something about disconnecting, walking a familiar path, and allowing yourself to be one with your surroundings.

For me, it’s therapeutic, which is why I said earlier that it doesn’t matter when and where. I will go for a walk. Learning to embrace walking and making it an integral part of my life makes starting a healthy life just that much easier.

As I said earlier, though, you’re going to want to start slow, maybe a walk around the block here and there like I did, and then gradually start increasing it.

Take advantage of your area. I live in the Bay Area, so I love walking around Lake Merritt. Aside from being an oasis for starting a healthy lifestyle, it offers the perfect sanctuary for exercise and an environment to immerse yourself in with different things going on.

Establishing a routine is crucial for long-term success. Don’t worry, though. Just get used to doing something active as you’re getting started. Once you start to feel like it’s becoming too easy and more of a habit, then start to create a routine.

For me, I commit to walking around Lake Merritt three times a week, once a day. This is because it was what worked for me, and I noticed I didn’t include specific times. You’re going to want to adopt a schedule that fits your needs. Over time, you’ll notice improvements in stamina and energy levels, propelling you further along your path to a healthier lifestyle.

As you become more consistent, you will want to add variety and balance to your healthy lifestyle. This looks different depending on what your goal may be. You could incorporate yoga, Pilates, or tennis.

Regardless, use the moment to build upward toward your bigger goal. For example, I started incorporating brief gym sessions after each walk. Strength training complements walking and contributes to a well-rounded fitness routine.
